Dr. James J. Braunreuther
I have been teaching for 26 years. During this time I have taught in Elementary schools, Middle schools and I have also taught at the College level. I served as the Fine Arts Curriculum Specialist for the Charleston County School District from 2003-2016. During that time I was responsible for the coordination of the music, art, dance, and drama programs across the 84 Charleston County schools, as well as all gifted and talented artistic programs. Additionally, I served as the project director for a Federal Professional Development in Arts Education grant. I have a B.A. in music education from Dowling College, a Jazz degree from the Musicians Institute, an M.A. and an Ed.S. in administration from The Citadel, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of South Carolina. I have served on the boards of the South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education, the South Carolina Arts Alliance, the ABC Steering Committee, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. I am a founding member of Engaging Creative Minds and the Charleston Marathon.
I believe passionately in teaching our students in and through the arts. I believe that education will not reach its full potential until we stop treating the arts as extra-curricular and bring the arts in to the center of our instructional practices. We will never close the achievement gap until we begin to close the opportunity gaps for children. Having equitable access to a quality arts education is a major part of closing the opportunity gaps for our students.
