Garden Project at Frierson Elementary
This is the image for the news article titled Garden Project at Frierson ElementaryThe Garden Project is underway!  Picture students of all grades planting, watering, weeding, and eventually harvesting all kinds of herbs, fruits, and vegetables.  Envision an outdoor classroom setting where students truly get their hands dirty while teachers facilitate science and math lessons. Imagine expert botanists and avid home gardeners from the community teaming with staff to excite student learning.  Consider attending a "Frierson Farmer's Market" to purchase produce and to taste test recipes made by student members of the after school Cooking Club.  These are the goals of the Garden Project at Frierson Elementary!

The Garden Project will foster learning during the day school and during the 21st Century Learning After School Program.  Shirley Salvo and Reverend Sidney Frasier, from the Sea Island Hunger Awareness Foundation, were instrumental in helping Frierson principal, Kimberly Davis, and 21st Century School Director, Cecil Diggs, in planning and developing a budget for the new Garden Project.
The Sea Island Garden Club has graciously donated $1000 already.  Funding for the entire project is still being organized.

Spring time planting will soon begin!  Two 30 by 50 foot fields have been cleared, raised garden beds have been situated, top soil and compost have been delivered.  "Now we need people power", according to Cecil Diggs, to help finish preparing the fields and construct the greenhouse. Materials for the greenhouse have arrived.  Please contact the school's office if you are interested in volunteering with the Garden Project!
