Our Mission

The mission of E.L. Frierson Elementary School is to develop confident, life-long learners who are competent, responsible, and self-motivated by providing a safe environment where parents and teachers support children as they explore an integrated, culturally diverse, and innovative curriculum that fosters critical thinking and creativity.

Marsh Restoration Project

Thanks to our partnership with the South Carolina DNR, E.L. Frierson Scholars get to roll up their sleeves and dive into real coastal conservation! Students plant spartina grass and set up oyster cages at Cherry Point Landing on Wadmalaw Island—just minutes from campus. It’s always a fun, muddy, and memorable experience for our kids.

Welcome Georgeanne Cheng!

Hello, everyone! My name is Georgeanne Cheng (pronounced "jorjan chang"--my husband's family is from Hong Kong), and I am so excited to be working with your wonderful children. I am the mom of two teens who attended a Montessori program from casa through middle school. My daughter is a junior and my son is a freshman at Academic Magnet High School. I have been a lead Montessori guide for the past two years and an assistant for three years prior. I believe in Montessori because I have seen how it builds confidence and compassion, fosters creativity, and inspires deeper learning.

 

Teaching is my second career. After graduating with a Master's in English Literature, I worked for many years as a technical writer for software companies.  As my kids got older, I began taking Montessori classes. I now have a Master's in Montessori Studies and am certified to teach lower and upper-elementary classes by the American Montessori Society. I recently completed the coursework for a Gifted and Talented endorsement, and I plan to use what I learned to make our lessons challenging and exciting. 

 

I look forward to meeting you all!

Welcome Layton Powers

Please join me in welcoming Layton Powers as our new Assistant Principal, effective July 1, 2026.

Many of you may already know Mr. Powers, as he is no stranger to James Island and the surrounding educational community. Throughout his career, he has served students and families at St. Johns High School, Camp Road Middle School, and James Island Christian School. His deep connections to the island, combined with his commitment to student success and community engagement, make him an excellent fit for our school.

In addition to his extensive educational experience, Mr. Powers brings several years of leadership experience in administrative roles. He has demonstrated a strong ability to build positive relationships with students, support teachers, foster a culture of excellence, and lead with integrity and compassion. His collaborative leadership style, dedication to academic achievement, and focus on creating a supportive learning environment will be tremendous assets to our school community.

Please join me in giving Mr. Powers a warm Frierson welcome. We are excited for him to join our team and look forward to the great things ahead.

Welcome Jessica Ammon

Hi everyone!

My name is Ms. Ammon, and I'm so excited to be joining the Frierson family this year as the Upper Elementary ELA teacher! This will be my fourth year teaching in CCSD.

I have a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from College of Charleston and an ESOL certification from Clemson. I'm passionate about teaching ELA and creating a classroom community where every student feels supported, confident, and empowered to thrive.

I can’t wait to meet everybody!
