Cell Phone & Personal Electronic Devices Policy
Effective Date: January 6, 2025
In compliance with state law and in the interest of fostering a focused and distraction-free learning environment, Edith L. Frierson Elementary School has established the following policy regarding the use of cell phones and personal electronic devices during school hours. This policy applies to all scholars, from 3K through 6th grade.
Policy Overview:
1. Device Restrictions:
- All personal electronic devices, including but not limited to cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, earbuds, and similar accessories, must be powered off and securely stored during school hours from 8:05 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
- Devices must be stored in students' bookbags and remain there unless an approved exception applies.
2. Approved Exceptions:
- Educational Use: Devices may be used for educational purposes with prior approval from both the teacher and school administration.
- Special Plans: Students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), medical plan, or Section 504 plan explicitly requiring access to personal electronic devices are exempt from this policy.
- Emergencies: Device use may be permitted in emergency situations or as explicitly authorized by school administration.
3. Enforcement:
- If a scholar is found using a personal electronic device during prohibited hours, teachers and administrators will implement the Positive Discipline Plan (PDP) to address the infraction.
- Repeated violations may result in escalating consequences as outlined in the school’s discipline policy.
Purpose of the Policy
This policy is designed to:
- Eliminate distractions and ensure a productive educational environment.
- Promote face-to-face interactions and engagement within the school community.
- Enhance academic success by minimizing interruptions caused by personal electronic devices.
Parental Support
Parents and guardians are encouraged to support this policy by:
- Reminding their children to turn off and store their devices before arriving at school.
- Avoiding communication with their children via personal devices during school hours. In case of emergencies, parents can contact the school office directly.
By working together, we can create a learning environment where every scholar has the opportunity to thrive without unnecessary distractions.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to supporting our scholars' success. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please contact the school administration.
